The project is industry driven and TWI is involved both technically and in project management. The consortium has the responsibility for the success of the project and has therefore organised the work activities into a number of discrete work packages. Each work package (WP) will be led by the listed partner, and TWI is responsible to maintain an overview and to ensure that the WP administration and the milestones are achieved.

TWI Ltd (UK)


With 550 skilled staff and a turnover of €57M, TWI is one of Europe's largest independent RTDs. It is membership based with 3,500 Industrial Member companies world wide. It is currently involved in some 40 EC projects, 24 of them in the NDT Group. TWI has become a world leader for non-destructive testing (NDT). Some 65 engineers and technicians work in the NDT Group, 22 of them on long range ultrasonics.

TWI is a world leading centre in non-destructive testing and condition monitoring research and development. TWI's NDT Group is one of the largest research groups in this field of science and technology with more than 60 researchers and engineers currently employed.

TWI Ltd will provide the research capability, the facility for testing Acoustic Emission (AE), Vibration accelerometer (VA), Temperature Sensors (TC) and Eddy current (ET). TWI will lead the integration and the validation of the Condition Monitoring System (CMS).

University of Sheffield (UK)

University of Sheffield

The University of Sheffield will participate in BearInspect through its Department of Automatic Control and Systems Engineering. The Department of Automatic Control is the largest department of its kind in the UK dedicated to the study of Control and Systems Engineering. Its research is at the frontiers of knowledge, and its courses are aimed at producing graduates of the highest calibre. The Department was awarded full marks (24/24) in the last national Teaching Quality Assessment.

University of Sheffield will contribute in the automation of the system by developing the appropriate signal analysis algorithms.

CMR Ltd will design and manufacture AE and VS sensors and supply electronics components for data acquisition, data transfer and storage.

Sinclair Knight Merz (SKM) is a leading engineering, sciences and project delivery firm. Its purpose is to deliver a positive and enduring impact on the world. The company has offices across Australia, New Zealand, Europe, the Middle East, South America and Asia.

SKM will provide access to wind farm, specifications for rotating components.

James Walker & Co (UK)

J. Walker is a UK-based company with a global reputation for solving fluid sealing problems. The company brings practical expertise and leading edge technology to the custom-design of optimum sealing solutions to match our customers' exact operational specifications - backed by testing and manufacturing to world-class standards. J. Walker manufactures over 200,000 different fluid sealing products: gaskets, compression packings and seals of virtually every size and industry standard.

James Walker will provide knowledge and expertise in sealing and electronic bolting technology related to bearings in wind turbine.

Le Carbone (UK)

Carbone Lorraine is world leaders in the renewable energy sector. Carbone Lorraine Electrical Applications is an expert in power and signal transmission, and has been working with leading manufacturers and users of rotating electrical machinery for many years. The company is one of the leading wind turbine component providers to operators and will provide electric components and samples.

Applied Inspection Ltd (UK)

Applied Inspection Ltd was formed in 1984 and fast created a first class reputation for providing an excellent non-destructive testing (NDT) service to the engineering, transport, foundry, mining, petro-chemical, off shore, power generation, aerospace and nuclear industries. Applied Inspection Ltd is an engineering inspection service provider along with consultancy services in the areas of quality assurance, supplier assessment and welding were soon added to Applied Inspection's portfolio. Applied Inspection ultimately aims to add expertise in condition monitoring to their portfolio.
